Some Vignettes Pertaining to REDP Activities
Establishment of Cable TV Network in a Remote Village:
Mr. Mohadutta Subedi, an unemployed youth of Dudilabhati VDC, Baglung, who was trying to go Arab countries to get a job till few years back, dropped the plan and established a Cable TV Network in the community after the completion of the 24 kW Gaundi Khola MHDS in the area that paved the way to brought in quite a number of TVs in the village. Now Mr. Subedi is not only making a nice earning to support his family, but also boasts on bringing the rest of the world closer to his village and modernizing it.
Earning Livelihood by Servicing RETs:
Mr. Deo Ram Lahar (B.K.) was a land-less person till few years back struggling to earn a livelihood even for a small family four. To add to the woes, he is a handicapped person by birth (his both legs are artificial) and an illiterate. Although the blacksmithy is his ancestral occupation, he is blessed with a incredible power of imagination and concept to generate a new creation. He was very much fund of developing new technologies or improving the existing technologies that were spread all over the villages viz. agro-processing mills, 'ghattas', rural electrification. The REDP office in Baglung having acknowledged the talents and skills of Mr. Lohar, provided an opportunity to undergo a training programme on repair and maintenance of rural energy technologies and end-use appliances. Further, the REDP, Baglung supported a soft loan of Rs 75000 to establish a workshop and by some most needed tools such as lathe, grinder and welding machine. Now, Mr. Lohar is not only making a nice money by providing services to the already established RETs but also installing new MH plants manufactured in his workshop. The interesting point to note is that his daughter, who has the school level education joins him during the time of training and writes down everything for him. Now, she is the de facto manager of the workshop.
ICT in a Remote Village?
It would sound quite ridiculous and almost incredible to most of the urban elite to hear the news about the establishment of a ICT in a remote village. But it is a fact that a computer institute is in operation very successfully and impressively to train local youths on various programmes of computer operation. This wonderful initiative has been made possible thanks to the establishment of the 24 kW capacity Theule Khola Micro Hydro scheme in the nearby vicinity of Sarkuwa. As the business with the instant success is in the course of steady expansion, the entrepreneur Mr. Bal Bahadur Thapa, the Theule Khola Micro Hydro Functional Group as well as the aspiring young students and local people are directly reaping the benefit from the enterprise. This has encouraged the other VDCs which also have established MH schemes, to follow suit.
Mill Operation by a Woman-A New Dimension in Women's Empowerment:
The advent of electricity in the community has not only eased the life of the people especially women, by relieving them from drudgery but also has empowered them socially and economically. Mrs. Tara Poudel, a housewife in Sarkuwa VDC not only established a 7 kW capacity agro-processing mill, but operates the mill herself besides carrying out all her household chores, thanks to the availability of power from the Theule Khola MHDS (24 kW), Sarkuwa. She is privileged not only by the attractive income, but also by the enhanced social status and dignity. She has been widely acknowledged for her exemplary roles and model in the society.
Bee Keeping - A Perennial Source of Income:
The forests have been well managed, community plantation works have been carried out massively in the naked hills and fruit and fodder trees have been planted almost in every household, thanks to the supports provided by the DDC:REDS, Baglung to the community. The development in the greenery not only helped preserve the natural environment, but also opened up a new avenue for a lucrative enterprise -the bee keeping. One can see the bee hives hung almost in every household which has supported the community people to get additional income.
